Yeah Pete, great game that was. all your neurosurgeons, scientists, and steven hawkins made it out alive, while only my jizz moppers, fruit pickers, hobos and dirty hookers made it out alive beyond the sharks and sea serpents. totally not cool.

I'm not sure how to feel about my Sox dropping $50m+ to TALK to a guy, but they are saying that this guys is the real deal, and you can never have too much pitching (unless your pitchers can't throw to first base, a la the 2006 Tigers). Guy has 5 pitches (including a "gyroball", which is out of Baseball Simulator 1.000, circa the NES days), and is only 26.
Plus, the added bonus of me posing hammered with Japanese tourists outside Fenway sounds fun.
If they sign this guy, a rotation of Dice-K Matuzilla, Schilling, Beckett, Papelboner, and Wake ain't too bad.
*sigh* Is it April yet?
*waiting patiently for anti-Red Sox hate posts* ;-)
on a side note, Tommy, looks like the Metropolitans put up $30m for the chance to sign him. This could mean they make a strong run at Zito, if they are willing to spend that sort of loot.

They paid $51 million, but they get it all back if they don't sign him in 30 days... it's not really payment to talk to him, it's just a minimum they'll need to include in his contract if they sign him. Strangely, he says he doesn't really know how to pitch the mythical gyroball, but he might have thrown it a few times by mistake.

I think the $51m goes to the Seibu Lions, his current team.

and the smartest thing about it is, I don't think other teams have the opportunity to buy rights to him if the deal with the Sox falls through. I think he would then have to play in Japan for another season. Wouldn't surprise me the Sox bid that high with no intention on signing him.

I was talking to a couple of guys from work who are pretty into sports and they said that the $51 mil would go to the government if it falls through.

no no no.
In the event that they don't sign him, we have to send Lagan to the Japanese government to work in the animation mines.

I think he would then have to play in Japan for another season. Wouldn't surprise me the Sox bid that high with no intention on signing him. Just wanted to make a quick comment here. As much as I would love to accuse the red sox of being part of some conspiracy to screw over everyone else, thats just crazy talk. By doing something like the red sox would not only screw the yankees, but also the japanese team, the player in question, and his agent Scott Boras. Firstly, you dont screw Scott Boras as that is probably the most well known sports agent in the game today and represents way too many superstars. You'll be fucking yourself over the next time you want one of his players since youll either never get first bid or the your price will be astronomically higer then everyone else. Second, you dont screw Japan as that is a huge mine of future talent just waiting to play in America. You pull some like what you accuse the red sox of, and these teams will simply refuse to entertain bids from you for future players. I dont care how much you hate them, nobody would risk losing access to japan just to stick it to the yankees. Third, see point 1 and 2.

jim, i was not saying that they were trying to screw the yankees, mets, or anyone else who sent in a bid. i was marveling at the possibility of it. it would be funny. oh, and btw, Scott Bor- deserves to get screwed. rectally. by a rhino.
