woo hoo! Sox signed Dice-K! should be another crazy summer. let's see if we can get back into second place! :-)
I gotta try to get tix to see bonds when SF comes to fenway. That is gonna be UG-LY. uglier than when fenway was swarming with Mets fans.
seriously tom, do you have to have a mustache to be a mets fan?

seriously tom, do you have to have a mustache to be a mets fan? All who worship at the altar of Hernandez, must adorn themselves in the likeness of the holy one. High Priest Selleck demands this of the flock.

can met, red sox, and yankees fans (not sure if the yanks play the giants and too lazy to look it up) all agree to appoint a fan to run out on the field and try to lacerate Bond's achilles'? I wonder if the albino from the Davinci Code is still for hire?

I nominate Marty.
Marty, no balls to hamstring Barry Bonds.

it's funny, cuz i said the same exact thing about the mets. 1. all stars at almost every position, 2. very few home grown products. 3. steve traschel was the longest tenured met until his release (is glavine now the longest tenured? probably would have been floyd). 4. an owner stating that he will be aggressive in the free agent market. it's kinda like the scene from star wars where luke kills pseudo vader on degobah, only to find that it is his face underneath the mask.

so I'm reading a book about Barry Bonds (Love Me, Hate Me by Jeff Pearlman), and I have taken it upon myself to do Cliff Notes on it.
Here they are:
Barry Bonds is the biggest asshole ever, but he's REALLY REALLY good at baseball.
The End.
Decent book, I recommend it, especially if you like books about people with enormous heads.

Fuller, i just finished Game of Shadows, and i came to the same conclusion. How this man is still alive, let alone breaking the home run record, following the enormous amounts of drugs he has taken, is a giant mindf-ck. God i hope he gets run over before he breaks the record. I think i once told tommy that i'm pissed that when i'm 70, i can't be one of those jaded sports callers who spoke about how gritty and determined players were from our era.

Game of Shadows was good. I thought there was too much stuff on track and field, I wanted to learn more about Bonds. dude is warped, mostly because of his dad. has a warped sense of humor, treats people like garbage, has a sense of entitlement, the whole deal. Weird thing is, the book is sprinkled with stories like him showing up at a baseball camp for under-priveleged kids for 12 hours, and then cutting a check for $20,000 on his way out, and then going back to the Pirates clubhouse and charging teammates $8 for extra batting gloves he had. I'm very back and forth on the whole Bonds and steroids thing. It's easy to chalk the whole thing up to cheating, but steroids weren't even banned in baseball when he, McGwire, Sosa, whoever else was allegedly doing it, so that troubles me. It also troubles me that people have been cheating in baseball for years (Gaylord Perry doctoring the ball got him into the HOF. Ty Cobb spiked every 3B he ever slid into, and don't forget just about everyone in the god damn world taking amphetimines for the entire season since essentially the 1960s). And here's the other difficult thing to wrap my brain around: Can you BLAME these guys? All of these dudes that take HGH, steroids, etc stand to make MILLIONS and MILLIONS more than they ever would have? So, people are doing it now, even with a .5-assed testing system, imagine what folks were doing in the 80s and 90s when the stuff wasn't even banned by baseball. (interesting side note: I go to school with a kid who scouts for the Sox, and he said that the junk isn't even as prevalent in the majors, it's the AAAA guys and borderline guys who need another 5 MPH on their fastball or another 10-15 feet to get the ball over the warning track that are doing it. THESE dudes are way into it) I think the biggest reason that people get so fired up about this stuff (you'll noticed that Shawne Merriman of the NFL's chargers got suspended for 4 games this year fro steriods use, and he's being talked about for defensive player of the year, where's the uproar?) is because of baseball's love of the NUMBERS. 61, 755, .406, 56. any fan knows what those are about. But since the sport has evolved so much over the past 125 years, the numbers are gonna be reflected funny. We spent 50 years only playing day games on the same coast, then came cross-country travel, which changed the game. There were no MINORITY players until the 50s (think Ruth, et al would have put up those kind of numbers against a higher caliber of player? who knows) Also, the game has changed. relief pitchers, weight training, better equipment, etc. The numbers are fluid, just like the country. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it’s a part of our past, Ray. ;-) ANYWAY. Bonds is a , and he may be a cheater, but the dude can HIT, and he can entertain, and is a character that evokes discussion. And, with a little luck, I'll be screaming at him when he and the Giants come up Yawkey Way this summah!!!!!!!!!!! GO SOX.
